Fantastic Carved Chinese Bamboo Dragon Tortoise, Qing

DESCRIPTION: A large and fantastic Chinese bamboo carving of the mythical Chinese “dragon tortoise” with segmented shell and a large fierce head stretched high and turned slightly to the left. The tortoise’s head is complete with flowing mane, teeth and a reticulated jaw, and the underside reveals the corm sections of the large bamboo plant. This incredible animal is one of the four most revered animals of ancient China, along with the dragon, phoenix, and kylin. Of these only the tortoise is real, the others being entirely fictitious, and symbolizes good fortune and longevity. Dating from the latter Qing Dynasty (late 19th C.), it has a lovely patina and is in very good condition with minimal age fissures and a minor chip on the underside. DIMENSIONS: 11” long (28 cm) x 6 ˝” wide (16.5 cm).
