Gorgeous Japanese Burl Root Smoking Set or Basket

DESCRIPTION: An outstanding example of Japanese sensibilities regarding craftsmanship and natural form, this fabulous Japanese smoking tray (or basket) is fashioned from a beautifully gnarled and twisting section of burled root wood, the undulating shape forming a natural handle for carrying. The set comes complete with a haizara (ash container) of Takatori stoneware in the form of a miniature hibachi, the mottled brown body festooned by streamers of white glaze. Meiji/Taisho Period (appx. 1890 – 1920); excellent condition with no breaks, splits or repairs. DIMENSIONS: Basket: 13 ½” high (34.3 cm) x 10” wide (25.4 cm). Haizara: 3 ¼” diameter (9 cm) x 2 ½” high (6.3 cm).
