Large Exquisite Japanese Lidded Ivory Brush Pot, Meiji

DESCRIPTION: A virtually pristine and very exceptional Japanese ivory brush pot, exquisitely carved in high relief with matching knobbed lid. Two whiskered dragons, each with double inlaid eyes, twist and cavort in the clouds around three large cartouches, the largest with an idyllic scene of a man crossing a bridge in a mountainous setting with pine trees. Two cartouches are on the opposite side, one featuring a phoenix in flight with flowing tail feathers, and the other with a large peony blooming from a rock outcropping with a bird in flight. On the lid we see a third dragon, also with inlaid eyes, winding over the surface around the knob. Dating from the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912), it is so rare to find a brush pot of such beauty in such exceptional condition (no splits, cracks or repairs) and of this magnificent size. DIMENSIONS: 8” high with lid (23 cm) x 5 ¾” wide (14.5 cm).
