| DESCRIPTION: A skillfully carved and polychromed study of Mazu (also Matsu or Mat-Su), the venerated Chinese Taoist Goddess of the Sea, protector of all fishermen and sailors. With sword in hand she calms a storm, her two generals at her side, midst a background of waves, clouds, sinuous mountains and pine trees. This incredibly detailed carving is crafted from three very large hippo teeth that have been joined and almost seamlessly integrated together into the design on both the front and back. In excellent condition, this spectacular carving has a beautiful, creamy patina and dates from the mid 19th C., Qing Dynasty. DIMENSIONS: Including stand, 10” high (25.5 cm) x 8” wide (20.3 cm). | |||||||||||||||
