Japanese Woven Bamboo Ikebana Vase or Basket

This Japanese woven bamboo Ikebana vase measures 15 inches tall by 5 inches in diameter. This vase is unusual in that it has additional painted details on the bamboo (see closeup photos). Vases of this style were traditionally used for the tea ceremony and for flower arrangement(Ikebana).

It is in generally good condition for such an old basket. This antique long handled basket has some dust and shows it's age a bit, but it is still quite usable.

We estimate this vase to date circa 1900-1920 or earlier.

Kado or Ikebana" the art of flower arranging, was developed as a Japanese art form side by side with the tea ceremony. It has roots in the 6th century, the ritual flower offerings made by Buddhist priests. It was not until the 15th century that the arrangement of flowers developed into an art form. The Ikenobo school, founded by Seinkei Ikenobo in the 15th century,is thought to be the oldest flower arrangement school, and from then many schools have been founded like Enshu, Koryu, Ohara, etc.
