This sterling silver lidded flask or snuff bottle is covered overall (except the standing base) with intricately detailed designs and pictures outlined in silver. It has a removable screw top also covered with colorful designs over silver. It measures 4.0 inches tall by 2.25 inches in width by about 1.2 inches in depth (100mm x 55mm x 25mm). It has two oval fields, each with an elephant shaking a tree, most likely attempting to dislodge a tasty meal. The cylindrical edges are covered with colorful leaf and flower patterns set against a black background. It is in excellent condition with the exception of one tiny missing square of lavendar enamel out of about 120 similar squares that form one of two rings that separate the designs. The missing enamel is about the size of a pencil point and not really worth mentioning (but we always do). There is another ring of royal blue rectangles adjacent to the lavendar one (with no losses). It is marked .925 on the bottom of the base. (.925 being the abbreviated mark for sterling silver.) It weighs 96.3 grams or 3.1 troy oz. We originally assumed that this was East Indian in origin because of it's designs, but we have had suggestions that it may be Persian or even Chinese, so we will leave such speculations to the next buyer. We will, of course adjust the listing to reflect further documented information, as it arises. |
