Medieval Terracotta Incendiary Weapon
A Medieval fired terracotta incendiary weapon with striped decoration, ca. 8th to 11th century AD. This is a rare example of these "Greek Fire" grenades because this one has been high temperature fired, significantly hardening the terracotta. After firing, decoration was added in the form of three parallel incised stripes. Intact. In excellent condition with some minor scratches. Fire grenades of terracotta and stone were used in combat during the middle ages by Byzantine and Arab armies. Just over 4 inches tall (11cm). Ex: old New Hampshire collection.
