A Villanovan bronze lid or applique with stylized bird heads, c. 8th Century BC. The three birds are similar, each having a long curved beak, and a sinuous neck that curves down to the rectangular base which sits above a pair of flanges. H: 1 5/8" (4.2 cm). Some minor corrosion to the edges of the disk. Mounted on a custom base. Ex Dr. Gilles Collection, Germany, acquired during the 1950’s & 60’s.

A large portion of a Coptic tunic, Egypt, c. 4th - 5th Century AD, linen and wool, with hemmed neck or under arm slit above a long intricate band decorated with alternating geometric devices. Below is a large orbiculus with a very beautiful and intricate interlocking geometric motif. Very well preserved and a wonderful example of the Roman weaver’s craft. 42" x 15 3/4" (106.4 x 39.4 cm). A large Coptic textile fragment with two geometric orbiculi, Egypt, c. 4th Century AD, the linen gauze-like and very fine with central seam. Each medallion or orbiculus is very intricate with a woven geometric pattern around four central circles. A very nice piece and a good example of the Roman weaver’s craft. 16 1/2" x 13 1/4" (36.6 x 33 cm). Ex Virginia private collection.

The central medallion is composed of a geometric motif within a narrow ring bordered by a wave pattern, parts colored in red and green. It is interesting to note that the decorative medallion on this fragment is originally from another garment and was sewn onto this one in antiquity. A Coptic textile fragment with intricate detail, Egypt, c. 5th - 6th Century AD. The main part of the fragment is of a very fine linen with a central embroidered strip containing an intricate vine pattern, a fish and a standing male figure. To the side is a medallion containing a youth on horseback with cape flowing behind, a hound running below; all within a double row repeating vine pattern. A nice example of skilled weaving! A nice Coptic textile fragment in custom mount, Egypt, c. 4th - 5th Century AD, with bright colors. The fragment is in the form of a stylized tree with fruit, within the center a heavily robed woman holding flowers or cornucopiae.
