An attractive Roman black-slipped beaker, 2nd - 3rd Century AD, with tapered base and thick lip. A single groove is cut at the top of the shoulder. H: 4 3/8" (11.1 cm). Nicely preserved and a choice example! An attractive type produced in Central Gaul and widely distributed across Gaul and Britain. Ex Dr. Gilles Collection, Germany, acquired during the 1950’s & 60’s.

SOLD 

A pair of Greek pottery vessels. The first is a Campanian fish plate, Greek South Italy, c. 340 - 320 BC, with raised foot and central depression, the top decorated with a pair of fish and a shell, rosette pattern at center. Repaired from shards, no restoration. H: 1 7/8" (4.8 cm); Dia: 5" (12.8 cm). The second vessel is a Corinthian aryballos, 7th - 6th Century BC, intact but with some surface weathering. H: 2 7/8" (7.3 cm). Ex English private collection.

A light green glass flared-mouth flask, Roman, 3rd – 4th Century AD. An elegant form with a bulbous body with lightly concave base and a tubular neck widening into a broad lip with ground rim. Repair at neck and patches of silvery iridescence, both inside and out. Museum numbers in red ink inside rim. H: 5 3/4” (14.6 cm). Cf. Kassel, p. 71, no. 142; Ex Boston Museum of Fine Arts, deaccession.

A Hellenistic bronze patera handle with ram-headed terminal, c. 3rd – 1st Century BC. Nice style with some light encrustation, the lower portion of the handle suffering from casting flaws. The base is curved for attachment to the pan, the rivets are still in place. Ex old English collection L: 6 1/2” (16.5 cm).

A large and beautiful Hellenistic terracotta figure of a woman, c. 1st Century BC, perhaps Venus, resting against a herm. She is wrapped in a voluminous gown and wears a rolled diadem on her head. On the lower portion of the backside is the signature of the maker in Greek, “ΠAPMENI…”, incised into the clay. H: 12 7/8” (32.9 cm). Restored from just a few large pieces, much of the white dressing remains and traces of red paint on the gown. A large and impressive piece! Ex old English collect ...click for details
