Right hand, which most likely held a patera, is missing and with thick olive patination. H: 2 5/8" (6.6 cm). Mounted on antique stone base. Ex old French collection, acquired in the 1970's.

A large terracotta incantation bowl, Near East, c.5th - 6th Century AD. The bowl is high-walled, with raised flat base and turned out lip. The outer walls have been decorated with concentric grooved below the rim and vertical impressions, which give a ripple effect. The interior with lines of 'pseudo-script' imitating Syriac or Aramaic around a demon with tall body and long appendages, another facing on the other side of the bowl. Diam: 10 3/8" (26.4 cm).
