| A terracotta pot-support with mask of Papposeilenos, Ptolemaic Period, late 3rd - Mid-1st Century BC, with long striated beard, within an arched panel. The back is plain, the edge of the fire bowl still evident. H: 3 7/8" (9.8 cm). On custom base. Cf. Bailey, "Ptolemaic and Roman terracottas from Egypt in the British Museum", pls. 122-123 for similar examples from Naukratis; Ex Orange County private collection. At some point during the end of the 3rd Century BC self-contained braziers of terracotta became quite popular and were produced at centers in the eastern Mediterranean countries, continuing in this form until the middle of the 1st Century BC. | ||||||
