Ruth Cole was brought up in England and came to New Zealand in 1972. Her landscapes in oil, pastel, or gouache and pencil, build up a sense of mood and atmosphere within a scene. She lives in a coastal area west of Auckland. She has won numerous awards for her paintings and has exhibited widely. While she initially painted in an expressionist style she now describes her work as 'painterly realism'.
