| Rare and wonderful mercury glass butler's ball,would have been set on a buffet and used by servants to observe guests without being obtrusive, so they could look in the reflection to see when their services would be needed. Probably ca 1850 and made by the New England Glass Co of Cambridge, Mass.. They were also known as silent butlers and only used in the most affluent homes. Mercury glass is a double walled glass where silver / mercury is fused to the inside creating a mirror effect. In very good condition with a few tarnish marks on base and neck. 10 inches tall base 5 in diameter, 19 in circumfrance of globe. | ||
