A pair of fine leaf dishes, so thin they are translucent, made in England by George Grainger and Company in Worcester, England circa 1890. They are glazed a very pale yellow with peach blush borders. The tips of the three-lobed leaves are all unchipped although the glaze has rubbed slightly. The company name for this ware, Royal China Works, is printed on the back of each. A fine quality black lacquer mauchline ware lozenge shaped lidded box, measuring 5-1/8 by 3-7/8 inches and 2-3/8 inches high. The lid is decorated with an oval shaped bouquet of flowers, bordered by a wavy gold line. The box is lined with red moire paper that is accented with braid. A barrel shaped wooden bank with an applied printed paper motto: "THRIFT". The wording reads: "To catch dame Fortune's golden smile, Assiduous wait upon her, And gather gear by every wile, that's justified by honour." A black lacquer mauchline ware two-part trinket box made in Scotland circa 1870. The top is decorated with a wreath of flowers including bluebells, yellow poppies, daisies and lily of the valley. An open book reveals the motto: "Remembrance. May each revolving year, dear friend, With joy begin, with gladness end, And Heaven its choicest blessings send, To cheer thee on life's journey." A tartan ware ring labeled "Prince Charlie" and in mint condition. The ring measures one-inch in height and slightly less than 2 inches in diameter. This tartan was one of the most popular, named after the Scottish hero, Bonnie Prince Charlie. The ring was made circa 1860.
The plane wood was coated with black lacquer before the floral ware paper decal was applied, emulating the lacquer wares from Japan that were new to Britain circa 1870. The ring is in excellent condition, with no dings, chips or cracks, and measures about one-inch in height and 2 inches in diameter.
Floral ware was one of the decorative motifs of Mauchline, although much less common. This pair was made in Scotland circa 1900, and are in excellent condition, with a few scrapes to the paper covering. The size is unusually narrow - about 3/8 inches in height - with the typical 2-inch diameter. Very pretty, with flowers in pink, orange, yellow, white and purple.
Completely intact and completely original, including its tiny pencil with bone finial, this notebook would fit in the pocket of a lady, circa 1860, who might jot down important thoughts or lines of verse. However it was never used, and all the gilt edged pages are in place and unmarked. Made in Scotland, covered with the McPherson tartan, measuring 2-5/8 by 1-3/4 inches, and in excellent condition.
A charming two-part thimble case in the McPherson tartan, which is stamped in gold on the side.
