| Culture: Egyptian. Date: 2040 - 1640 BC (Middle Kingdom). Material: Ring in gold, scarab in amethyst. Condition: Intact, very good. Provenance: Ex: Early American private collection. Measurements:19 mms for scarab, 1 inch wide for ring (25 mms). Weight: 6.9 grams. The gold hoop round in section and tapering in each end, decorated with dotted motifs in sections. The scarab in amethyst inscribed with a jackal deity aside and a bird at the bottom with a turned head. The quality of this ring is indicative that it may have been a royal sealer that once belonged to a higher status person like a Governor of a city, a Superintendent, a judge, or a Chief Steward. All Egyptian gold scarab rings are very rare, and our example is no exception. Cf: Lot 221/229, Christie's New York Ancient Jewelry Auction, 9 December 2008, No. 22, plate XII, Scarabs of Royal Personages and Officials, Egyptian Scarabs, P. Newberry. | ||
