This interesting piece is a Byzantine/Late Roman bronze polycandela, that dates circa 5th-7th century A.D. This piece is approximately 13.75 inches high by 6.4 inches in diameter. This piece is a bronze circular disk that is suspended by three chains that come together into a bronze ring that is attached to a bronze hook. The circular disk is composed of three-rings for insertion of glass oil lamps, and the upper surface has three raised loops for the attachment of chains. The three chains are made of near equal segments that were cut from a single bronze strand, and these segments were bent into individual links which formed a chain. This piece has an attractive dark green patina, and has some spotty dark green/brown mineral deposits. This intact piece has no repair/restoration, is in superb condition, and is of a very solid construction with no modern additions. This piece was lowered by rope and pulley into position to service the glass oil lamps, and then was raised up into a high position in order to effectively light a section of a room. This type of piece was usually used in a wealthy home, or possibly a Byzantine church. This piece is a scarce smaller example, as most examples normally have six to eight rings which supported their glass oil lamps. An analogous example is seen in Christies Antiquities, New York, June 1998, no. 311. ($3,000.00-$5,000.00 estimates, $3,450.00 realized. This lot has two examples, and both have six rings which supported their glass oil lamps.) This piece also hangs on a custom made black metal stand, and is a very decorative example with nice eye appeal. Ex: Private New Jersey collection. Ex: Fortuna Fine Arts, New York. This attractive piece is a Byzantine bronze cross that has a nice silver inlaid design. This piece dates circa 4th-7th century A.D., and is approximately 1.9 inches high by 1.9 inches high by 1/16th inch thick. This piece has an attractive silver inlaid design which has a detailed "circle-and-line" type design. This piece also has a nice dark green patina with some light green and red surface deposits. There are also five small holes seen in this piece which were likely used to sew this piece into a garment. This piece is in superb condition, and could easily be worn as a pendant today. This piece also comes with a custom black plexiglas display stand, and can easily be removed, as it simply hangs on the stand. Ex: Joel Malter collection, Los Angeles. Ex: Private New York collection. I certify that this piece is authentic as to date, culture, and condition:
