| A fine Byron Temple(1933-2002) salt glazed American Studio pottery teapot. The Japanese influence on Temple’s work is very apparent in this finely crafted pot. The teapot is approximately 7” high and 6” in diameter(handle to spout). The condition is very good with a small minor chip on the spout that has been restored(see photos), no other chips, cracks or restoration. The pot has Byron Temple’s impressed BT mark below the handle(see photos). From the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft; “Byron Temple - 1933-2002 Byron Temple, internationally recognized for his unpretentious wood-fired and salt-glazed ceramic works, died April 14, 2002, of respiratory failure in Louisville, Kentucky. He was 68. Raised on a farm in southern Indiana, Temple studied pottery at Indiana's Ball State University. Throughout the five decades during which he worked and taught, Temple passed along the legacy of English potter Bernard Leach, with whom he apprenticed from 1958-1961. From 1962-1989, Temple established and operated a production pottery in Lambertville, NJ, making mostly functional tableware. A shift in his focus to more artistic work prompted his retirement from the production pottery in the late '80s, when he moved to the Louisville, Kentucky area to pursue more individualistic pots for the rest of his career. Temple influenced generations of potters with classes and workshops at schools ranging from Penland and Haystack Craft Schools to the Pratt Institute and the Philadelphia College of Art, among others. His work, self-described as "sleek and slim" with "simple lines" and "marks left exposed," was what Temple considered to be "a combination of the Bauhaus and Japan." His work is regularly shown at Artifacts Gallery in Berea.” Insured shipping will be $16.00 in the mainland US, if you want it shipped to Hawaii, Alaska or anywhere else in the world please email me for shipping cost.
