Late 17th/early 18th Century French Silk Valance
This spectacular embroidered valance from a child's bed has over seventy hand stiched figures, some with vellum inserts (some deterioration apparent to a few of the vellum inserts). Metallic threads were used in the piece's edging. The original function of this valance was to depict characters from fantasies to awaken a child's imagination. The piece features images of kings and queens, Chinese characters, Arabs on camels, fishermen on boats, dragons, butterflies, flowers, birds carrying men away in their beaks, and Blackmoores. The images sum to over seventy and must have taken many months of work to complete. This valance from a child's bed is almost 18 feet long and 12 inches high (14 inches high with the valance's original wooden tassels). The piece was brought back directly from France. Some of the seams were originaly glued, with some separatation over the piece's long years. I had the seams hand stitched by a professional restorer who also put small mounting areas on the top (so that the piece can be hung with no resulting damage to the silk).
