A very large beautiful Egyptian pre-dynastic black top pottery vessel, re-joined from 12 original fragments. Comes with featured custom display stand. Very rare to find in such a large size. Black-mouth pots were
produced during the Naqada I period and are
characterized by a dark band around their rim.
The remainder of the exterior surface is coloured red
with haematite, while the interior is entirely black. This
two-tone effect was obtained by up-ending the pot in a
layer of slow-burning coals. The lack of oxygen had
the effect of carbonizing the surface, thus blackening
the clay. Dating to Naqada I-II circa 3600-3000 BC Measures 32cm height / 37cm inc custom stand. Ex-Mckenzie auctions Perth Western Australia, previously the property of a private West Australian collector. |
