BRONZE OIL LAMP, HELLENISTIC PERIOD 332 – 63 BC. Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalms 119:105). A lamp such as this might have lit homes during the flower of the Classical age. A metaphor of joy and prosperity, for hope, for life itself, lamps have illuminated the path of civilization for centuries. They have guided great thoughts through the night, stood vigil with lonely passions. In the presence of this simple object, we are in touch directly with a vanished world, with the people once warmed by its glow. Today it remains as an enduring symbol of man’s desire to conquer the darkness Found: In Judea - The Holy Land. Condition: Choice and very rare, as found - unrestored, lid missing. Dimensions: Length 105 mm, Width 45 mm, Height 25 mm Reference: Qedem 8 Monographs of the Institute of Archaeology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem {Ancient Lamps in the Schloessinger Collection }

An Interesting & Very Rare Ancient Engraved Bronze Pendant of St George from Jerusalem. Dated between 1000 - 1200 AD. Although St. George is important to the Orthodox Religion (feast days April 23 and Nov 3) there is no tradition of the dragon until the Crusaders arrive. Only under western influence does the story of George and the dragon appear on eastern icons. This gorgeous etched pendant was found near Bethlehem. A lovely antiquity, intact and wearable.

Byzantine Empire, 800 - 100AD. Bronze Reliquary Cross. Superb Bronze Reliquary Cross hinged at the top and bottom, the two halves forming a space for a religious relic. The obverse depicts Jesus in the "Christ the Redeemer" position with outstretched hands to sides. The reverse depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the Prayer Position (orans) praying for the "Grace of God". Created with two identical halves that were hinged together leaving the center hollow for placing a religious relic. A reliquary was a receptacle for keeping or displaying sacred relics. In Christian usage, relics were objects connected with, or remains of, the bodies of saints or what was purported to be the True Cross. Christians are known to have venerated the relics of martyrs at least as early as the 2nd century. The Crusades led to the influx of relics from the Middle-East and they became popular items of adornment used for protection of crusaders and the wealthy who could afford them. This is a superb example of a very rare size and type. 60mm x 25mm Intact and hinged, unsealed.
