| Face mask. Igbo ethnic group. Nigeria, first half of the twentieth century. It carved wood and polychrome. Dimensions: 23 cm height. The Igbo are one of the most widespread ethnic groups in Africa, found mostly in southeastern Nigeria. The first Igbo reached the meseta Awka-Orlu for four or five thousand years, and since the earliest times they have an organized political system. The Igbo have worked various materials for their artistic and ceremonial pieces, including copper and its alloys, as well as wood. This mask is carved polychrome wood and then to reinforce the expressionism of the facial features, exaggerated and dramatic, designed to frighten the enemy or to witness a ritual magic, that evoking the terrifying world of the supernatural. | ||||||||||
