Heavy antique door from a Japanese kura, or storehouse, from the late Edo-Period (c. 1850). The traditional Japanese house is very minimally furnished, with furniture often changing seasonally. When not in use, furnishings and other valuables were placed in the kura, or safe storehouse. These traditional storehouses may have been made from stone to protect them from fire.
