Breathtaking lacquered isho-dansu, or clothing chest, dating to the Meiji-period (late 1800's). This piece originates from the Yonezawa Prefecture, a region noted for excellent quality lacquered tansu. Each section of this chest measures 22 1/2" tall by 43" wide by 17 1/2" tall, and combine to make a large and impressive chest. Antique isho-dansu, or Japanese clothing chest, dating to the late Meiji-period (early 1900's). This single section tansu is crafted from Kiri, or Paulownia wood, prized by Japanese furniture makers for being strong, lightweight and naturally resistant to damage from pests or the elements. It has been thoroughly cleaned and restored with a light brown-hued beeswax, and is in very good condition.
