Antique woven bamboo basket, or hanakago, designed for use in the Japanese art of flower display known as ikebana. This exceptional piece features a design blending elements of both free form and symmetrical weave. Tightly woven strips of bamboo are intertwined around larger, bisected pieces of figured bamboo stalk on all four sides to create a basket which is structurally solid and pleasing to the eye. Antique woven bamboo basket, known as hanakago, designed for use in ikebana, the Japanese art of floral display and arrangement. This basket dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900), and is in good to excellent condition. The weave is tight and detailed, and the handle is crafted from burled keyaki, or shizen-boku.
