Antique Japanese sectional kitchen tansu chest, or mizuya dansu. Meiji-Period (c.1890), 61 1/4 inches tall, 46" wide and 17" deep (bottom section, 28" tall; top section, 31 1/4"). Thoroughly restored, good to excellent overall condition, with beautiful patina. Upper door panels and drawer fronts accented with beautifully grained keyaki hardwood. Japanese antique angled tansu chest, similar to a kaidan dansu or step chest. Meiji-Period (c.1900). Thoroughly cleaned and waxed, beautiful dark patina. Vintage Japanese hari bako sewing box. Beautiful golden lacquer and brass hardware. Thirteen inches wide, 10 1/4" tall, and 8" deep. Early Showa-Period (c.1930), very good condition. Includes several period items, including spools of thread and a delicate little lacquered storage box decorated with painted bamboo on the lid.

Beautifully restored antique Japanese tansu glass display cabinet. This chest dates to the mid Meiji-Period (c.1880) and has been thoroughly cleaned and waxed with a warm reddish brown beeswax to restore the original luster to the wood. Constructed entirely of finely grained hinoki and sugi, subspecies of cypress indigenous to Japan, this tansu features fine craftsmanship and mortise and tenon joinery. Antique Japanese merchant tansu chest, or choba dansu. Simple, clean design with dark amber patina. Drawer fronts crafted from keyaki, a prized hardwood indigenous to Japan. Small hinged door hides three additional drawers, traditionally used for stowing valuables. Very good condition, with good quality cast-iron handles. 33 1/2 inches tall, 32 1/4" wide, and 14" deep. Japanese antique carved wooden gong with striker, Taisho-Period (c.1920). Hand-carved in the shape of a koi fish, approximately 24 inches wide, 7 inches tall and 2 inches thick. Designed to be struck with the hammer shaped wooden striker. Good overall condition; indigo cloth on eyes and fins has largely worn off, and there are some chips in the paint, particularly on the bottom.

Koto are hollow body, and fashioned from beautifully grained kiri, or paulownia wood, prized among Japanese craftsmen for its strength and workability. This instrument measures 75 1/2 inches long, and has 13 strings which stretch across movable bridges.
