Japanese earthenware bowl in the Tokoname style, dating to the Taisho-period (c.1910). The matte bronze-hued outer finish is the natural result of drifting ash in the wood fired kiln. This distinctive feature, as well as the white-brown inner glaze, are indicative of the Tokoname style. A crab figurine is perched near the rim. Signed by the artist, this item has a rustic charm which would match perfectly with craftsman or similar decorative motifs. The bowl measures roughly 4" tall and 8" in diameter at the widest point.
