Heavy antique door from a Japanese kura, or storehouse, from the late Edo-Period (c. 1850). The traditional Japanese house is very minimally furnished, with furniture often changing seasonally. When not in use, furnishings and other valuables were placed in the kura, or safe storehouse. These traditional storehouses may have been made from stone to protect them from fire. The doors of the kura, like this one, typically feature solid, heavy construction, often with cast iron or steel locking plates. The grid work design allows for air movement to prevent mold and mildew, with wire mesh to repel unwanted pests. Crafted from finely grained hinoki, a subspecies of the Cypress family indigenous to Japan. Double tenon framing construction, inset cast iron wheels. Excellent condition; thoroughly cleaned and waxed to a beautiful deep patina. Perfect as a room divider or for converting to an impressive dining room table.
Please Note: This door is part of a pair. Its mate is dealer number E289 I have listed them separately to allow for more detail photos of each item. I will sell them together or individually.
