The Art and Orchid Gallery's hand decorated condiment jar is from Thailand, the 19th Century Bangkok Period.[198A] Similar ceramic lidded jars from Thailand (Siam) were made in China for the Thai market between 1775 and 1825 and can be found in references.[198B, 179C] Larger covered containers were used in Thailand to serve food and smaller ones, like ours, contained betel nuts (nuts of the Betel palm), or a condiment made of betel nuts.[198D] This vessel and cover are made of porcelain wit ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's hand carved ivory netsuke has two faces, happy and sad, on a spinning bar. This is a rare but not unreferenced piece. We found two others out of hundreds researched.[12A] The ivory is signed with incised, stained mark on bottom (see photo). The carving depicts a seated woman with a fan, long hair and incised kimono. The kimono motifs are rice grain and pine branch. There are pierced holes for the 'himo' (silk cord).[42B, 120C] A netsuke is a toggle held a ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery offers cha wan, or tea bowls, hand decorated by Japanese artists whose superb technical skills were combined with gracefulness of form and a fine mixture of compounded colors.[3A, 11B] Kyoto Satsuma was exported to the West between 1875 and 1920 to satisfy the high demand for this Japanese ceramic art work generated by the International Expositions of 1862, 1867, 1873 and 1876.[34C, 104D] Most Kyoto Satsuma ware was decorated with hand painted floral designs. The Art and Orchid Gallery's hand carved bone netsuke, or toggle, shows its 19th Century age with worn surfaces, cracks and worn pierced holes. This netsuke is a standing figure of an old man, seemingly out of breath, carrying a sack and wearing an incised mugwort leaf cloak and a hat with combs or horns attached.[ILL A] One can see the trabeculae (photo) of the bone under the feet (where it was probably glued to a base as a cabinet ornament, or okimono, after its life as a netsuke.[Ref B] N ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's hand carved ivory toggle, or netsuke, is 19th Century Meiji with age cracks and wear. It appears to be a Buddhist priest with his book and candle. His long robes go from neck to floor and are incised and stained with floral patterns. His obi (belt) about his waist and folds in robe are also incised and stained.[120A] There are two pierced holes in the back, one has been enlarged by long use of a 'himo' (silk cord) tied from the netsuke toggle around the ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's Japanese ivory seal, called an 'in', probably from the Meiji Period, depicts a Karo Shi-shi, or Chinese lion, standing on a platform, the bottom of which is a seal.[120A, 120B] It seems likely that the well known Japanese sagemono, the inro, was first used in the 7th Century as a seal case, as its name implies, and only later developed into a portable medicine case.[120A] Japanese seals are usually made of ivory or hard wood and bear the name of the per ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's coverless tea jar is decorated with exemplary over glaze polychrome mixed enamels on an opaque white glaze, white-gray stoneware. It has a hardness of 7 on Mohs scale but is not translucent. [33A, 97B] The Chinese, originally, (Sung Dynasty) were not concerned with translucency.[32C] This jar is covered with a glossy white glaze upon which very fine brush work in mixed enamels expresses the birds and flowers motif. In 12th Century pictorial Chinese art, this the ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's antique carving appears to be Middle Eastern, possibly 5th-6th Century A.D. A similar looking antiquity was found in Hadda, Afghanistan and is now in Musee Guimet in Paris.[106A] Both images are of a bearded ascetic, such as one from the Jewish sect of Essenes.[181B] Our figure is carved out of translucent, fluorescent (yellow, see photo) alabaster, a pietre tenere of hardness of 2 or less.[95C, 97D, 96E] Alabaster is a compact variation of gypsum, a hydrated cal ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's pair of small bronze vases were made in Japan during the Meiji Period either for personal Buddhist altar use or for export. The Japanese do not make anything in pairs including vases for their personal use, except for Buddhist rituals.[3AA, 168B] During the Edo Period (1615-1868) metalwork crafters were employed by the Shogunate and the Feudal Lords. With the Meiji Restoration these crafters lost their patrons. Some metal crafters changed their profession, while ...click for details
