The Art and Orchid Gallery's entirely hand made vase is covered with polychrome enamels from the interior neck to the unglazed base. The Hotei or 'God of Contentment' comfortably rests in the dented sac that he usually carries. The Art and Orchid Gallery's very old carved figure has been hollowed out (most of the back, through the neck and into the head, as well as fitting on the back of the chair) by the maker. At least some of this hollowed space was to store rolls of calligraphy. Unfortunately, wood worms also hollowed the figure, mostly the base and the chair, but some worms made it to the neck of the carved official including the scrolls of calligraphy. This vessel was cast in two halves with bands of high relief around the neck and bulbous body. Contrasting with this, are the upper (very top); middle (largest); and lower bands (above the foot) which have been chased or ground smooth to exaggerate the relief decorations.
