The Art and Orchid Gallery's figural limnings are hand painted with incredible precision of curved forms (see enlarged photos). The hair, facial contours, leaf veins and clothing details are best appreciated under magnification. The artist used soft pastel enamels like the famed Italian miniaturist, Rosalba Carriera, initiated in the 17-18th Centuries.[44A] Our set of four limnings are not portraits as was the custom for that period, but are fanciful painting from "Les Mille et Une Nuit ...click for details

The Art and Orchid Gallery's hand painted miniature in an elaborate frame was done in 1957 by Bogota. It appears to be a portrait of a blue-eyed, blond boy named Thoret. He is well dressed in white shirt, red bow tie, and green herringbone jacket. The painting was done on an oval disk and mounted in an elaborate gilded frame with ribbon cartouche appliques and old Greek dot-and-dash inner molding.[152A] To preserve its excellent condition, the miniature and gilded frame was mounted inside a ...click for details

Mary Queen of Scots was born in Scotland in 1542. She was well educated in France and spoke French, Latin and English; wrote excellent poetry; played the lute; and sang well. At 16 years old she married Frances II and, thereby, became Queen of France, a time she thoroughly enjoyed. Frances II died within 2 years and Mary sadly returned to Scotland. This antique miniature is a finely painted portrait of Mary Queen of Scots. Probably a copy of a painting of her as Queen consort of France. Her por ...click for details

This antique miniature painting of Marie Antoinette (en verso on frame) is done on ivory in soft pastels characteristic of Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) trend which dominated the art form in the 18th and 19th Centuries in Europe. This portrait of Marie Antoinette is a younger French Queen than we find in later paintings by her famous portrait painter, Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun (1755-1842). Our painting shows Marie with an elaborate coiffure and plumed hat. She is becomingly shown in a white lace-tri ...click for details

This miniature painting is of the fine featured Lady Jane Grey (1536-1554) with jewels. She was the granddaughter of Henry VIII's sister. Her father-in-law, the Duke of Northumberland, convinced the dying King Edward VI to name Lady Grey as his successor. Lady Jane Grey did not want to be Queen of England. She protested that she was unfit for this perilous task being forced upon her by her relatives. Unfortunately, for her, she very reluctantly became Queen of England about July 9, 1553. Indian religious philosophies profess that inspired religious art can help worshipers pass from the material real world called Maya to the unseen spiritual world called Brahman, an all-inclusive eternal state of pure consciousness and bliss away from earthly desires and pleasures. In this particular miniature the Mogul school characteristics are apparent. The Indian representation of the female form is exemplified here with the breast development, the relatively small waist and large curved hips ...click for details

Good art has an aesthetic appeal to the viewer. In India, perhaps more than anywhere else, religious art is meant to produce strong emotional reactions of pleasure and satisfaction. This emotional reaction is called rasa. The Art and Orchid Gallery's Indian miniature is hand painted on ivory with very fine details of a Mithuna enjoying an evening and each other with one attendant serving them. It is a romantic situation in the tradition of Krishna-Radha with erotic overtones. This is a 20th ...click for details
