This blue coral, Heliopora coerulea, is the only known octocoral to produce a massive skeleton. The skeleton is of aragonite, a form of calcite crystallizing in the orthorhombic system. It is common in shallow reefs of the Indo-Pacific including the Ryukyu Islands of southwest Japan, the Coral Sea in northeast Australia and American Samoa. The largest blue colony in the world is thought to be off the southwest coast of Japan.

Tubipora musica, or organ pipe coral, was first described by Linnaeus in 1758. It is the only known species of Tubipora and belongs to the Order of soft corals. Although it is a soft coral, it has a unique hard skeleton of calcium carbonate that contains many organ pipe-like tubes. The skeleton is bright red. Balanus psittacus is a marine crustacean of the subclass, Cirripedia. It is completely sedentary in the adult stage. Its loss of power of locomotion leaves little trace of its resemblance to other crustaceans. This purple-striped barnacle can attain a growth of up to 9" in length and 3" in diameter.
