Figural Wood Study of an Old Fisherman
At one time the Chinese divided their society into four occupational groups. Most esteemed was the scholar, followed by the farmer who was an important producer. Next came the artisan and finally the businessman or merchant who was considered a non-producer. Wood carving is one of the most important Industrial Arts of China. This treen is of an old fisherman, the Chinese representation of the businessman, with his pole waiting to catch something and his basket for his prized catch. Since he is an old fisherman with a long beard and thin, tired looking body, he may also represent a character from the 4th Century Chinese literature, Chuang Tzu. This little fisherman has a detachable carved hat. It has been restored but still has age cracks. The treen has marks carved on the bottom (possibly shop marks) and the number '26'. More pictures, history and references available on our website. Size: ~ 3 1/2" H x 5" (to end of pole); Weight: ~ 86 grams
