| This signed Indian portrait box is hand painted and signed 'Nanglia'. It is in the post-Mogul natural Indian style. The painting was probably copied from the 18th-19th Century Rajput school with obvious Indian highly prized style of lavish use of gold. The in-lacquer gold on this box is found on side trims, top trim, rug pile, bracelets, veil borders and wine glass. The young woman wears a full gathered skirt made using the ancient Indian tie-and-dye technique called 'bandana'. The remainder of her costume: a bare midriff and a short transparent bodice revealing her breasts can be found in 18th Century miniatures during the decline of the Mogul influence and return of painting to more native Indian style seen in the Guler Art of 1750-1760. All fabric designs are ancient Indian. The box is in excellent condition. More pictures, history and references available on our website. Size: ~ 2 3/4" x 1 1/4"; Weight: ~ 55 grams | ||
