Antique German Limning of Marie Antoinette
This antique miniature painting of Marie Antoinette (en verso on frame) is done on ivory in soft pastels characteristic of Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) trend which dominated the art form in the 18th and 19th Centuries in Europe. This portrait of Marie Antoinette is a younger French Queen than we find in later paintings by her famous portrait painter, Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun (1755-1842). Our painting shows Marie with an elaborate coiffure and plumed hat. She is becomingly shown in a white lace-trimmed gown holding flowers (one of her loves) and probably a mirror in her yellow gloved hand. This fine painting is under a convex glass cover with gilded brass bezel set in concave ivory held by a plane of ivory with an intaglio border. The back of the miniature is typical newsprint. This one is stamped with the maker, Banger, with the Exhibition (Kunstausstellung) in the famed spa town of Bad Nauheim, Germany. There is a brass triangle for hanging. The limning is in perfect condition. More pictures, history and references available on our website. Size: ~ 4 3/8" H x 4" x 3/8"; Weight: ~ 86 grams
