| This antique Chinese bowl (wan, in Chinese) was made during the Guang Xu Reign (1895-1909) after the 1891 McKinley Act (since 'China' in iron red is barely visible below the reign mark). The wan is made of porcelain with over glazed enamels inside and outside. It has a hardness of 7 (Mohs Scale); is translucent (see photos); and has a great ring. The Chinese calligraphic characters in red with gold outline are in medallions on the north, west, south and east side of the bowl and read: "wan shou wu chiang", which translates to: "a myriad of ages without ending".[32A] The decoration inside the wan expresses the same good omen for the possessor of the bowl. The shou character inside the bowl with the ruyi heads surrounding the inside rim together read: "longevity as you wish". The porcelain is very thin (not eggshell) with a short foot and flared rim.
