| The Chinese Hua Niao painting from the Emperor Hui Zong's (1101-1125) Ten Categories of Classical Pictorial Art (Class 8, Books 15-19) is called 'Flowers and Birds'.[1A, 73B] This mid-20th pictorial art work is done in ink and color on silk with a brocade frame. The artist uses age old brush techniques including 11th Century boneless technique of Mi Fu and Mi Youren for the treed background.[16 I] The art is signed in ink (possibly, Pan-Pao) with a red seal.[144 O]. The painting depicts a long tailed bird (possibly a hybrid warbler) on a viburnum branch with Fall colors with a few of its blue berries left. There are small growths of bamboo nearer the bottom. Birds with long feathers have been popular subjects for Chinese paintings ( and other Chinese arts) during the Ming and Qing Dynasties and were frequently used on export wares of the 19th Century. The Chinese call a bird with a long tail: shou dai niao and it symbolizes longevity.[123P] Of course, bamboo (zhu) has long been associated with China and has the same sound 'zhu' for 'as you wish'. Therefore, this painting may convey the symbolic 'wish for longevity'.[123Q] Export label reads: "Made in the People's Republic of China".
