Antique Japanese Shippo Cloisonne
This antique Japanese shippo cloisonne is fused glass on a metal base. It is crafted with multiple techniques of a generally European Art Nouveau motif.[10A, 156B] This art object is a ball-shaped covered jar with a brass conventionalized chrysanthemum knob [67C, 9D], fashioned in the Late Meiji Period. It manifests the aesthetics of floral forms and sinuous lines of the fin de siecle Art Nouveau.[46E] The techniques that the Japanese used to bring about this objet de vertu include: gin bari, or covering the copper base with embossed silver foil and translucent enamel called suki-jippo.[8F, 9G, 10H] The embossing appears to be tiny hammer and punch work to give it a pebbled look. There are grapes, vines and leaves fabricated in a wide copper wire outline and filled with matt enamel. a technique called doro-jippo. A final technique used here, which is Japanese and evokes the Art Nouveau style, is called kyoto-jippo. It is sinuous grape vines made of just wire, no enamel. The subtle shading in the grape leaves and grapes is created by mixing the application of enamels. This fine workmanship is only enjoyed upon close examination which is required to appreciate the genius of Japanese art.[129J] However, the decorative and striking appearance of this shippo has been achieved by a textural relief of the design standing above the ground combined with a contrasting of the matt opaque cloison designs against the bright reflective embossed glossy enameled ground. The ball-shaped jar is surrounded with enamel work. Some attention to the bottom, the cover knob and one set of 3 evenly green-colored leaves at the top reveals true Oriental techniques.[42K, 129L] The interior is counter-enameled for strength with floor sweepings.[10M] and the shippo has been cleaned. Size: ~ 3 1/4" H x 3 1/4"; Weight: ~ 153 grams
