| The Art and Orchid Gallery's ivory carving is an itinerant craft vender carrying a wide variety of wares on a bamboo pole. The crafts he displays include: masks, hats, fans, baskets and pierced lanterns.[159A, 159B, 159C] He carries an incised pilgrim's gourd next to his right hand. The crafts are decorated with incising in ink. The seller's clothing and both sides of the ivory base are very finely hand painted in polychromes or inked. Out extreme close up photos show the precise detail. The following polychromed diapers can be found on the figure's clothing: triangle diaper, rice grain and coin, flower in tortoise shell, cloud and fan pattern.[42D, 34E, 159F] The ivory base is covered with ink painted diapers, mostly trellis with quatrefoil and ribbon patterns. The base is very finely painted in red with the name of the carver's location; it is Shan Ch'uan.[32G, 32H, 73I] This carving is a sectional, not carved as one piece, generally believed to be made in the mid-20th Century. It is in excellent condition and passes tests for ivory including: hot needle test, insoluble in acetone and Mohs scale hardness of 6.[33J] References available upon request.
