Chinese Carved Ivory Itinerant Craft Vender
The Art and Orchid Gallery's sectional ivory carving depicts an itinerant craft vender carrying his wares on a bamboo pole. His craft work includes: masks, baskets, fans, lampshades, hats, a mallet and pilgrims' gourds.[159A, 159B, 159C] These crafts are decorated by incising to show the fibers, bands of silk and wood grains; then outlined in ink. The clothing of the vender is covered with diaper patterns, polychromed in red, green, gray and brown. Some of these diaper patterns are called: triangular diaper, rice grain and coin, flower in tortoise shell, key pattern and clouds.[42D, 34E, 159F] Our extreme close up photos show the precise details. The base is a polygon of sectional ivory incised and ink stained with bamboo, floral, rice and coin and fan patterns. The bottom of the base has the familiar carver's location mark, Shan Ch'uan'.[32G, 32H, 73I] The carving has been restored and is in excellent condition. It has a high polish patina; has passed the hot needle test; insoluble in acetone test; and has a Mohs scale hardness of about 6.[33J] It was made in the mid-20th century. References available upon request. Size: ~ 8" H x 6" x 3"; Weight: ~ 1200 grams;
