Antique Damascene Calligraphy Ink Box, Mughal
The Art and Orchid Gallery's calligraphy ink box is made of solid brass with Damascene silver inlay work on the cover, sides and the inside well covers. Decorative techniques using contrasting metals can be traced back to the craftsmen of ancient China and Egypt. The inlaying of silver and gold into copper alloys, like bronze and brass, was a widely practiced art in Damascus, hence, the name Damascene.[162A] This metal craft came to India from Persia and Kabul.[169B] Our box is mostly covered with Persian curved, symmetrical, repetitive patterns and ogival forms.[171C, 161D, 161E] There is enough styles including the silver triangles, and bent wire hinge to prove its Indian subcontinent origins.[135F, 147G] The hinges outside the cover, and the inside the water chamber and mixing ink container covers are brass with bands of silver. The outside and inside Damascene surfaces have been cleaned. However, the inside stained chambers are as we received them. The box is in good or better condition with little silver inlay loss in the back on the hinges (see photo). We estimate the piece to be late 18th to early 19th Century based on its use; the quality of the Damascene work; and referenced Indian pieces.[147G, 171H] References available upon request. Size: ~ 2 1/2" H x 4 1/2" x 2 1/4"; Weight: ~ 782 grams;
