About Arte Japonica
ARTE JAPONICA, Latin for the art of Japan, sums up what we are about. The basic rule in design is that form follows function, but what has fascinated us from our early days was that in Japan form closely follows art. One only need see a samurai's helmet or sea captain's chest (funadansu) to understand this. Especially amazing are helmets and masks, some helmets being made from as many as 62 hand-forged plates of iron, perfectly aligned and decorated with the most amazing of decorations (maedate), and masks often forged from one plate of steel and almost always very dramatic.
Specializing in Japanese antiques
We specialize essentially in two areas; what we call "samurai art" (armour, swords), or bugu in Japanese, and small wooden chests or boxes. The interest began 18 years ago with tansu, so this is an area which we will continue to pursue. It is fascinating the number of boxes the Japanese used for a variety of purposes; for writing brushes, seals, tea ceremony goods, kimono, scrolls, documents... All beautufully made. They instantly add a lovely Japanese touch to any room. We hope you find what you're looking for with us. Thank you.
