Athens, Greece, late 6th to early 5th Century BC. Paintings: Athena Promachos. Reverse: Two nude athletes with javelins and discuss. The sphere between the legs of the athletes is a follis or inflated ball for playing an early form of soccer developed by the Greeks around 1000 B.C. into a kicking/throwing game, called episkyros. Early balls were made of lined and hair wrapped in string and sewn together. Later the follis was made from inflated pig bladders wrapped tightly in leather. 9-5/8" ...click for details

Southern Italy, Ca. 5th-4th Century BC. Bowl is composed with alternating painted orange bands and the natural color of the terracotta, both on the inside and outside of bowl. Rim of bowl is painted with four groupings of orange stripes. Two handles are attached below rim. Sits upon a small, footed base. 8-3/4" handlespan x 3-1/2"H. Small rim chip, otherwise intact/excellent condition.
