From the ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, ca late 2nd millennium BC. Fine terracotta ceremonial drinking vessel (rhyton) constructed of cylindrical cup and animal head (in the form of a mouflon, native wild sheep) spout – opening at the animal’s mouth. Entire vessel covered in red slip, now showing great deposits from burial. 6-1/2"H, lower section repaired, else quite excellent. Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Estate, Denver, CO acquired in the 1960s.
