Asmat Wood Ancestor Pole

Large carved wooden "Ancestor's Pole," dating between 1950 and 1960, coming from Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Asmats did not believe in natural causes of death. This was not only due to the fact that numerous Asmats were killed in fightings between the villages: passing away after an illness or in old age was considered to be the result of witchcraft and was in turn the starting point for new fightings with other villages. After the death of an Asmat an ancestor pole was made. Men went into a nearby mangrove forest, cut down a tree and brought it back. A representation of the deceased was carved into the bottom of the trunk, and one or more of his ancestors were represented above him or her. The pole was erected in front of water, so as to allow the soul to reach the other world via the ocean. This fine example features two male figures one atop the other, each holding weapon in their hands, hair painted black. In fine condition, stands 32"H.
