Unearthed in Jerusalem in the 1940s by noted biblical archaeologist, Nelson Glueck purportedly at the site of a Samaritan temple... Ancient Roman Head of a Woman, probably Aphrodite, ca. 400 - 500 A.D. Typical heavy, marble-like limestone common to Jerusalem with deep-cup wavy hair, simple facial features, including large almond-shaped eyes, mouth slightly open. Measurements: The head itself is 7"H x 6"W, 12-1/2"T including custom stand. Heavy! Given as a gift from Mr. Glueck to an Israeli friend, then by decent to previous owner. A nice larger example of a Late Provincial Roman head!
