Sukhothai, the old capital of Thailand, is famous for producing ceramics ranging from household uses to architectural ornaments. Ceramic architectural ornaments, including finials, railings, supports and fittings, were produced to decorate temples and big buildings. The well-known architectural ornaments are ceramic finials in the form of sculptures such as Naga or Guardians.
This set of ceramic architectural ornaments consists of one fitting and two finials, painted with cream glaze. Once inserted on top of the fitting, each finial is fixed by a piece of wood inserted through a small hole on its leg towards the back part of the fitting. The front of the fitting is decorated with a low relief band of Thai stylized floral motif. The finials are in Thai stylized leafy shaped. Age: Thai, Sukhothai period, circa 14th – 16th century.
