"Bencharong" is a Thai word, meaning "five colors". It is used to refer to Chinese ceramics made to order for Thai market since the Ayutthaya period in 18th century. Bencharong also refers to the use of five colors in decorating the ceramics even though the color range sometime exceeds five. Later evidences show that Bencharong was also produced in Thailand during The Bangkok period in 19th century. The decoration of Bencharong varies from flowers to figures of Thai gods and Thai mythical beasts. It is also decorated with stylized Thai patterns of motifs inspired by flowers. "Lai Nam Thong", meaning "gold wash" refers to a group of Bencharong decorated with gold color. Age: Chinese made for the Thai market, Bangkok (Rattanakosin) period, Circa 19th century.
