Qing Dynasty, A Pair of Chinese Wooden Lion

A pair of wooden male lions with their paws resting on balls.

Lion is a special animal to Chinese people. The lion is regarded as the king in the animal world, so it is represented power and prestige. The ball played by the male lion symbolized the unity of the empire.

It is believed that lion can protect human from evil spirits. That is why Chinese always place lions at the gates of imperial palaces, official residences, temples and tombs.
