$820 for the pair

Offered here are a PAIR of well-painted porcelain bottles. They were made at the Arita kilns during the late 18th or early decades of the 19th century in a style one might call Kutani (due to the colors). The primary palette of the over-glaze enamel decorations is an orange-red, together with green, yellow, blue and magenta. Two of the four sides are painted with the same motif; a standing Geisha and a spray of flowers against a white ground. The shoulders and necks of the bottles are entire ...click for details

Offered here is a very good stoneware ceramic sculpture of HOTEI, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune in Japan. He is shown in a relaxed posture, resting upon his bag of treasures, with a fan in his left hand and the top of his bag in his right hand. He was hand-carved and fired at the Bizen kilns, famous for their dense, fine, reddish clay, sometime during the first half of the 19th century. $4,750

Offered here is a great work of Japanese folk art. It is a four panel futon cover mounted as a two-panel folding screen. The fabric of the cover is 100% home-spun cotton with a rice paste resist and painted design (tsutsugaki in Japanese) of a large colorful Phoenix (Hoo) landing on a paulownia tree. The multiple colors of the Phoenix are highly decorative and almost amusing in their patterns. Obviously the maker had fun making this piece. I had the screen made in Kyoto nearly 25 years in o ...click for details

Offered here is a fine, late 18th century MIZUZASHI, or fresh water jar, used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It was made in Seto, as is clear from the iron brown glaze and the dark buff-colored stoneware body. The shape is extremely well done, with a strong profile of slightly in-curving sides that flare a bit toward the top. Cut from a hump of clay after throwing, a detail thread-cut pattern can be seen on the unglazed base. Also visible on the base is a deep cut to one side where the thread ...click for details
