Japanese KIMONO Panel Edo
Offered here is a very fine panel from a late Edo period, ca. 1820-30, KIMONO. The ground fabric is white linen and the embroidery is all silk and gold-wrapped threads. The kimono was a katabira, worn by wealthy women during the hot summer months. The panel is 13 inches in width (selvage to selvage) and 31 inches in length. The overall condition is good. There are no tears or repairs, but there are a few old stains. The silk embroidered areas are strong and the colors are still vibrant. The areas that appear to be tied-dyed are actually printed (suribitta) using a stencil, a common technique used during the late Edo period.
